Hiring a Pro in Turkey: What to Agree Before Work

For a repair, renovation or installation at home, agreeing properly with the pro (usta) is as important as finding one. Most disagreements come from details not made clear at the start: who buys the materials, what the price includes, when the job will finish or what happens if something goes wrong. Language differences can make this harder for foreigners, so putting things in writing helps even more. This guide covers the main points to discuss before hiring a pro and your rights as a consumer in general terms.

Agree the scope of work in writing

Describe what the pro will do in as much detail as possible. For example, for electrical work, state clearly how many sockets and switches will be replaced, which circuits will be renewed and whether the fuse board will be touched. When the scope is vague, every extra item that comes up during the job can become a dispute.

You do not need a formal contract to put the agreement in writing; the quote, message history or a short job description works too. What matters is having a record that both sides understood the same thing. Messages in the app are easy to translate and keep.

  • List of work to be done
  • Total price and what it covers
  • Start date and expected finish date
  • How extra work will be priced if needed
  • What happens to removed materials and debris

Who buys the materials?

Make clear at the start whether the pro or you will buy the materials. If the pro buys them, having the brand, model and quality in the quote also makes it easier to compare prices. If you buy them, decide on the right product and quantity with the pro.

Listing materials separately from labor makes it easier to follow any changes during the job. It also helps to agree in advance what happens to unused materials.

For repairs, asking to see the old part that was replaced is a reasonable request. That way you understand which part was changed and why, and you have something concrete for warranty or refund claims.

Ask for an invoice or receipt

Getting an invoice (fatura) or receipt for the work and materials matters if you ever need to claim your rights in a dispute. Especially for parts and appliances under warranty, a warranty claim can be difficult without an invoice.

The invoice or receipt should include a short description of the work, the date and the amount. Keeping these documents for the warranty period makes it easier to claim if problems appear later.

Ask about the labor warranty

Many pros give a labor warranty on their work for a set period. Ask in advance how long it lasts and what it covers, for example whether they will come back free of charge if the same fault returns, and get it in writing if possible.

Remember that a parts warranty and a labor warranty are different. A part may have a manufacturer's warranty, but a problem caused by installation falls under the labor warranty.

Pay when the job is done

As a general rule, paying after the job is finished and checked is recommended. For large, long jobs, a partial advance may be requested to buy materials; in that case, record the amount paid and what it is for.

When you post a free request on Senin Ekip, you get quotes from verified pros in your area and choose one by comparing ratings and reviews. You message in the app before hiring; phone numbers are shared after you hire a pro. You pay the pro directly; Senin Ekip does not handle or hold payments.

Jobs that affect safety

Electrical installations and gas appliances directly affect the safety of people and property. This work must be done by people who are competent in the field and hold the required documents. Do not hesitate to ask about the pro's experience and any certificates.

Your consumer rights for faulty work

Turkey's Consumer Protection Law No. 6502 gives consumers various rights for services bought from people who provide them commercially or professionally. If a service is faulty or not as agreed, you can generally ask for the work to be redone, a price reduction, the fault to be fixed or to withdraw from the contract.

First try to solve the problem by talking directly to the pro, and keep your messages. If that does not work, disputes below a certain amount go to the consumer arbitration committee (tüketici hakem heyeti), and those above it to the consumer court. Applications can also be made through e-Devlet. Check the Ministry of Trade's announcements for the current monetary limits and application rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is a verbal agreement with a pro enough?

A verbal agreement is valid, but it is hard to prove. A written record such as the quote or message history makes things easier if there is a disagreement.

Should I pay in advance?

As a general rule, paying when the job is done is recommended. If an advance is requested for materials, record the amount and what it is for in writing.

What can I do if the work is faulty?

First contact the pro and ask them to fix the problem. If it is not resolved, you can apply to the consumer arbitration committee or the consumer court under your rights in Law No. 6502.

Does Senin Ekip handle the payment?

No. Senin Ekip is a platform that connects customers with service providers; you pay the pro you hire directly.
