When should a combi boiler be serviced?

A combi boiler is usually recommended to be serviced once a year, before the heating season starts. Late summer and early autumn are the best time; with the first cold days, services get busy and appointments are harder to find.

Following the service intervals in the manufacturer's manual also matters. For boilers still under warranty, servicing by an authorized service may be one of the warranty conditions, so it is worth checking your warranty document. If you rent, check with your landlord who arranges and pays for the service.

Signs your boiler needs attention

This work must be done by people trained and authorized to work on gas appliances. Opening the boiler cover or touching gas connections or combustion settings is never a job for the user.

Radiator flushing

Over time, sludge and deposits build up in the system and can stop radiators heating efficiently. A radiator that is hot at the top but cold at the bottom is a common sign of this. In that case the system may need cleaning with a suitable method.

Radiator flushing is usually done with a special machine and cleaning solution. How often it is needed depends on the age of the system and the water. Ask the service which method suits your system.

Simple checks such as bleeding air from radiators and keeping the pressure in the range given in the manual can be done by the user; for anything you are not sure about, ask a specialist.

Safety: gas and carbon monoxide

Any work involving gas must be done only by authorized specialists. If you smell gas, do not touch electrical switches or light a flame; open the windows, turn off the gas valve, leave the building and call the natural gas emergency line (187 in Turkey).

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas; it can form when the flue is blocked or combustion is faulty, and it is life-threatening. If you feel headache, dizziness, nausea or weakness, air the room immediately, go outside and get medical help (112). Keeping a carbon monoxide detector at home is recommended.

Choosing a service

Ask whether the service has experience with your boiler brand and holds the required authorizations. Agreeing in advance on the scope of the service, whether parts are original and the labor warranty avoids uncertainty later.
